My name is Tinny, and I have been a small-scale farmer since 2013. For many years, I relied on conventional farming methods that were heavily dependent on rainfall. Unfortunately, I had limited access to advanced farming knowledge, especially techniques that could help me adapt to climate change. This made farming challenging, as my yields were often low, providing just enough to feed my family and me, with very little left to sell for income. At times, I had to seek temporary jobs outside of farming to meet some challenges.
In 2023, I joined ResClime, then known as Botswana Envirobuddy Organization, after hearing about their work in water conservation. Little did I know this decision would open doors to a new chapter in my life. At ResClime, I was introduced to innovative farming techniques, such as potato sack farming, which allows crops to grow with minimal water—a solution I desperately needed. For the first time, I felt like I was gaining the tools to adapt to climate change and improve my farming practices.
In early 2024, I joined the ResClime permaculture garden project as a farm worker. This was a life-changing opportunity. Through the project, I am learning the principles of permaculture—a system of farming that works with nature to ensure sustainability. The garden is not just about growing crops; it’s about creating a space where women like me can gain skills, income, and confidence to transform our lives and our communities.
Although we are still in the early stages of the project, I feel hopeful. The garden has been planted, and we are nurturing the crops with great care, knowing that this is just the beginning. While we have not yet started supplying fruits and vegetables to the community, the vision is clear: to provide affordable, nutritious produce to local families while conserving the environment.
Working in the ResClime permaculture garden has given me a renewed sense of purpose. It is not just a job—it is a stepping stone to a better future for me and for others. I have yet to start my own permaculture garden, but I am learning skills here that I hope to one day apply on my farm. For now, my focus is on contributing to the success of this community garden, which has the potential to bring lasting change to many lives.
I want to appeal to donors to support this vital project. Your contributions will help us scale the garden, improve its infrastructure, and ensure its success. The garden is not just a farming project—it’s a source of empowerment, resilience, and hope for small-scale farmers like me. Together, we can create a sustainable food system that benefits the entire community. Thank you for believing in us
